March 17 (Period 5): Your goal for today should be to have a clear vision of the problem you are researching. What SPECIFIC (i.e. narrowed down) topic will you be researching? Be as specific as possible. What sources did you find today? How are these sources useful?

ReplyDeleteToday I developed my idea for my project.
ReplyDeleteLast work class I wrote up a list of hobbies that interest me but also could be investigated to reveal underlying social problems floating within the spectrum.
Today I decided to create the basis of my project around music and the social stigmas surrounding it. But that's not the big question, is it?
My project will be confronting the following idea(s): How do we get rid of the connotations around certain kinds of music and relating that to certain kinds of people who listen to them? When do we start/stop to marginalize people based on what music they listen to? Are socio-economic divisions at all based upon the music we listen to? Are certain music listeners seen as lesser people when one may listen to hip-hop because of where it came from or country music because of the people that is subconsciously attached to? Are these individuals then seen as not as good as people that come from a higher “class” that have more eclectic tastes?
While I am aware I have to pick and narrow my language as to which exact problem to dissect, the solution is clear. We have to rid ourselves of the connotations surrounding certain music. The tricky thing is the how.

Today I was looking at what I would like to get accomplished by the end of the semester and what steps I need to take to get there. I have decided that I would like to have done my background research on other organizations that have done similar projects and their rights and wrongs along the way, and then use this to have a clear idea of my own process, as well as having developed a prototype of my package. Today I also found grant foundations which might be suitable for my project and I began to look at what sort of holder the materials might come in, as well as the overall costs of my project.
ReplyDeleteToday we narrowed our topic down to gender roles and its effect on subtle sexism. We have found many articles from JSTOR and will get down to reading and annotating those. We are also trying to see if it would be possible for us to present our change at the GET conference at Payton in April.
