February 23 (Period 5): What were you accomplishments today? This might be narrowing down your topic, doing research, etc. When discussing your specific research, please make sure to list what specific research you have done (title of article/book, author, etc.) and how this can possibly be used in the development of your project. What sociological questions do you have that will guide your research in the future? What is on your "to do list" for next class?

ReplyDeleteI changed my topic now to men and suicide rates, I will narrow my project even further but for now this is what I am researching. I have done some research and found a book, and article on the internet to help me. These will help me ask questions and learn more about the topic. Some questions I have are why do men have higher suicide rates than woman in all states. On my to do list I want to continue research on my topic.

ReplyDeletewhat i did to day was a made a Google doc for websites about my topic i found a website on the new your times about upwards mobility. what this websites says is that in recent years the most people think that upwards mobility has declined or has raised in presents but actually it has not. to day i'm going to find a website that talks about people trying to put an difenition on upwards mobility.
ReplyDeleteI did research today on where and why cyberbullying occurs, as well as how to counteract it. I'm still thinking of how I can relate it to the community, but I'm sure I'll find one.
ReplyDeleteAfter your advice, I will focus my topic on hispanic students at Roberto Clemente high school and analyze how the agents of socialization effect their decision of dropping out of high school. As soon as I can, I will write a survey and have Clemente high school students take the survey. i still have to think about the survey questions for now..
ReplyDeleteWe started narrowing down our topic by asking questions that are a bit more specific. We still have to narrow down by a lot, but we are trying to see what are we want to venture into with the umbrella of gender and sexuality.
ReplyDeleteSome of our questions are: Why is gender a thing? Why are some things girly and others boyish? What is masculinity and femininity? What is gender roles influence on sexism? For the last question we might apply it to Payton.
To day i narrowed down my topic to why is video games a male oriented genre. while i was do ing this i set up a google doc and a was able to find a grate website on polygon which is a grate website like a news company and found a news story about my topic
ReplyDeletehttp://www.polygon.com/features/2013/12/2/5143856/no-girls-allowed
next time i will try to get the reading done and i will continue reaching my topic.
Today my partner and I were able to narrow down our topic to bullying and gun violence throughout the city. We are still gathering data and statistics about our issue by looking at articles, radio shows and video clips.
ReplyDeleteToday I was mostly looking at information on the stages of literacy development and how having books in the home and interactive parents can assist this process. This is important so I know that my project will effective and not a waste of time and books. I have also decided that I want to include other information on literacy in these packages, and so I must do research on facts and statistics.
ReplyDeleteIn order for this to be effective I have to look at whether providing books will be enough to spark literacy. I have to look at whether it will be more effective to provide only baby board books or books for multiple stages of development. I need to figure out if the lack of early literacy is because of lack of access to books or because of a lack of dedication on the part of parent to share. I also want to look how a home environment affects a students ability to perform in school and how their stages of development are sped or slowed.
Some helpful sites have been readingrockets.org, zerotothree.org, reachoutandread.org, earlyliteracylearning.org, nea.org, and nces.ed.gov
I also pinpointed Mount Sinai in North Lawndale as a hospital that might be good to work with.
Brandon and I narrowed down our topic to bullying and how it leads to gun violence in adolescents. We also found many reliable websites with statistics, facts, articles on teenage gun violence and how it leads to death and other problems in the agents of socialization of adolescent lives. There is a published article by Melissa Anderson that talks about gun violence from the perspective of teenagers who have actually experienced gun violence in Chicago - specifically in Gage Park. I also found the statistics in the smartgunlaws.org website that says 1.6 million teens live in households with loaded firearms. An age group that ranges from 0-19.
ReplyDeleteWhat type of bullying leads to gun violence? What specific agents determine the type of bullying and therefore gun violence? What can be done to spread awareness in ways that hasn’t been attempted yet? Why is the 69% of the population not helping to make a difference in the 31% killing itself?
To Do: Narrow down on solutions. Specifics of gun violence like gangs, bullying, mental issues that affect the gun violence.
