March 17 (Period 8): Your goal for today should be to have a clear vision of the problem you are researching. What SPECIFIC (i.e. narrowed down) topic will you be researching? Be as specific as possible. What sources did you find today? How are these sources useful?
Today, Cynthia and I searched for statistics and data about our communities. We came to the conclusion today to research the topic of gun violence within our communties. We want to see in which ways, educational history, relationships and local income play a role in the percentage of violent crimes within the area. We found out many statistics about race, and education within our communities. We found a website called city-data.com where we were able to locate a number of statistics we used in the research of possible reasons for the problem in our community.

ReplyDeleteToday, Brandon and I researched articles and other sources such as studies and videos that support our reasonings of what the root problem of gun violence is in the Gage Park and North Lawndale neighborhoods. We came to the conclusion to research the topic of gun violence within our communities. We want to find out how educational histories, relationships, and local incomes play a role in the percentage of crime and gun violence in these areas. We found a website called city-data.com where we found statistics that support our reasoning for the possible reasons that are the root problems of crime - specifically gun violence. This is useful because this research is the first step in trying to narrow down a solution for this problem.
ReplyDeletetoday what i did was that i narrowed my topic down from upwards mobility. To upwards mobility does the location of the business affect a business amount of money they earn this will help me in the long run because i will now have a topic and i started my presentation.
ReplyDeleteToday I tentatively focused my topic to "How does social class affect the businesses in an area and perpetuate the social differences?". In some of my research I noticed how the health in poorer areas is worse, perhaps by worse food.
ReplyDeleteToday I finally decided on a topic and began to do more research. My topic is going to deal with the overcriminalization of certain groups, and the impacts of having such a large prison population. My topic would analyze both problems within the prison system because of overcriminalization, and how certain groups were impacted by this drastic increase in the prison population.
ReplyDeleteI want to explore how changing people's perceptions of homelessness can create possible solutions to chronic homelessness. I want to look at specifically what people think of homeless people and why these misconceptions exist. Then I want to explore the real cause of homelessness. It will also be important to research what solutions are already out there. I found a few Ted Talks about homelessness and also a Daily Show that analyzed Utah's Housing First Program. These can help me begin to see the stereotypes associated with being homeless.
ReplyDeleteI asked a new question today. Should able-bodied actors play the roles of disabled characters? I think this new question today connects to the first question I was trying to answer, what is causing the lack of disabled actors in the media? There is a minimal amount of roles that can be played by disabled actors. Most of these roles are played by able-bodied actors who then win Oscars for these portrayals. There are differing opinions on who should play which character. It's a complex subject that raises questions that are hard to answer. I think that as I go along, I'll have more questions than answers. We'll see.
ReplyDeleteToday I narrowed down my topic to the problem of anti-feminism and how it all started. What went wrong? Why did the feminist movement alienate these people? I'll be looking at the history of feminism and anti-feminism, specifically Phyllis Schlafl and the ERA, and the different waves of feminism. Then I want to discuss the misconceptions about feminism, and attempt to create a solution and bridge the gap between the two groups. I found a blog and a post from the Daily Beast that discuss these topics.
ReplyDeleteToday, we decided on the topic of wages of construction workers and firefighters. We made a Prezi and discovered a new source: http://www.dol.gov/whd/sec14c/prevailWages.htm . We are considering watching the construction workers episode for 30 Days before next class.
ReplyDeleteToday I decided on a topic regarding gun violence and socioeconomic status. While I am not yet sure of the question that will guide my research, I would like to explore the correlation between gun violence (by neighborhood, city, and state) and socioeconomic status. I would also like to analyze the ways in which gun ownership perpetuates economic inequality in general.
ReplyDeleteToday I narrowed down my topic to how gender socialization causes gender stratification in cinema, specifically women being unfairly misrepresented in horror films. The socialization of women in media in the past century as being sex symbols and eye candy for audiences has carried over to the horror genre. This, in turn, has caused them to often be put at a lower standard in horror films. I found a source called “horrorfilmhistory.com” which discussed how and when the first horror films were made. Specifically, it explained how beginning in the 19th century, photographic trickery and techniques like “spirit photography” were used along with gothic literature to portray dark, psychological, and bizarre tales which would later be considered horror films. This source allows me to detail the history of horror films in my project and compare the template of the original horror film to that of the more contemporary horror film.
ReplyDeleteToday I've narrowed down my topic to be about African American teens' lack of success in their communities. I know this topic is still sort of broad but I don't have enough resources to solidity a more narrow thesis. Some of the sources i found today helped sway my opinion on African American teens from them just misbehaving to being sort of mislead.

I found sources explaining why Hollywood is whitewashed and also about ignorance of white people towards other cultures which could be another cause of the whtiewashing. My topic was already narrowed down to the lack of Latinos on tv. it is still that I don't think I'm going to go narrower.
ReplyDeleteToday, i managed to come up with a more narrow question to ask regarding the importance of women in photography and advertisement. There is a visible standard of beauty created through many advertisements these only serving the purpose of making the products being advertised a possible way of achieving this image that is seen by all women and often times unrealistic. I began watching Miss Representation during class.
