February 23 (Period 8): What were you accomplishments today?  This might be narrowing down your topic, doing research, etc.  When discussing your specific research, please make sure to list what specific research you have done (title of article/book, author, etc.) and how this can possibly be used in the development of your project.  What sociological questions do you have that will guide your research in the future?  What is on your "to do list" for next class?

  1. Today at your suggestions, I narrowed down my topic to the services/stores provided to neighborhoods depending on its social class. I will try to see what is offered in my own neighborhood and in others.

  2. I read a few more articles about possible solutions to homelessness. One was "Home Free?" This explained a tactic Utah has tried that gives people homes without requiring them to pass a "housing ready" assessment. Another was "Hidden City" that discussed the bad conditions of shelters in New York City. These articles can help me focus my research on different strategies to ending homelessness. One question I have is what is people's perception of homelessness and how does this affect the solutions offered to get rid of homelessness? Next class I will continue to research possible solutions.

  3. I spent today's class looking for possible topics on NPR's website. Among the articles I read was "Part Asian-American, All Jewish," about the small Asian-Jewish community in the United States. The intersection of specific ethnic and religious minorities in the United States is an interesting topic to me, but I am unsure of how to find a problem with it. I also read an article about the historical context of racial division along political party lines, "Why Did Black Voters Flee The Republican Party In The 1960s?" Social division caused by the two-party system may be an interesting topic to pursue.

  4. Today, I did more research on my topic, and I modified my topic to focusing on how women are often misrepresented unfairly in horror films, both on and off screen. I looked at an article at www.ew.com called “Women Still Severely Underrepresented in Film, Study Finds” by Carolyn Todd. The article looked at a recent study that showed how high grossing movies in the past 5 years, including horror films, have been largely dominated by near to all male casts and directors/writers. This helps supports how women in horror films, and in all films in general, are largely and unfairly misrepresented. On my to do list, I plan to research the male occupancy in the film industry, and from there I plan to pose a question to the effect of how the male occupancy in the film industry affects female inclusion and misrepresentation in the industry and in films themselves.

  5. I don't think it posted earlier. Yesterday, I narrowed down my topic to focus mostly on representation and portrayal of Latinos in the media. For next class I will be able to look for sources that are more relevant and less broad.

  6. After your advice, I started looking at the geography of the food pantries in the Chicago area and I was debating on whether or not I should create my own map or try to find one. I also worked on how exactly I was going to solve the lack of food pantries. I am still working on this aspect of my project.

  7. I forgot to blog the other day. I found the difference between disability arts vs. disability in the arts. Culture started to remove discrimination of performers based on physical, emotional, sensory differences. Physically integrated dance is a part of disability in the arts, which is art that includes performers with medical conditions without putting the focus on disability. It shows disability as a social phenomenon and not a medical model construct.

Inclusion of performers with medical conditions within performances increases with audience acceptance.

  12. I chose my topic in class: anti feminism and how or why this movement came to be. I had time to do some research as well, and I found their website, www.theantifeminist.com as well as their tumblr page, www.womenagainstfeminism.com. I'd like to focus on the historical context of the group first, and then look at not only what they are today but also why and how they revolved over the years. Next time I need to collect more sources and decide what kind of project I want to make.
