February 13 (Period 5): What were you accomplishments today? This might be narrowing down your topic, doing research, etc. When discussing your specific research, please make sure to list what specific research you have done (title of article/book, author, etc.) and how this can possibly be used in the development of your project. What sociological questions do you have that will guide your research in the future? What is on your "to do list" for next class?
My accomplishments today were narrowing down my topic. My project will be about race and poverty, as to how it's so hard to get out of poverty and thrive. Which race I'll work on or research more is still unknown. I did research on different races trying to find what would be more interesting towards my liking. My to do list for next class is to finalize my project topic and find research on it.
ReplyDeleteToday was a great start to my project. I was able to narrow down my topic from crime throughout my community to race and gunviolence throughout the area. I researched and read several articles from the Huffington Post that represented my topic very well. One of those articles which was How to Slow Down Shootings In a City Plagued By Gun Violence. The article gave a very in-depth analysis of the problem at hand throughout the community and how it affects the entire city as a whole. As of this moment I have no current sociological questions that will further my research. But that is the main priority on my to-do list for next class.
ReplyDeleteBlog post one: *I Am typing this for the second time now, i'm not even sure this will post to the blog*

Questions that will aid my reasearch:
Why is gender a thing?
Why are some things girly and others boyish?
What is Masculinity and femininity?
To do List for next class:
Find out if im working alone or with others
Keep a tag on Jenner(A transgender Celebrity) in the media
Research more on the importance Representation in the media.

In my research I have decided to focus on the effects of social stratification in literacy, starting at birth. I want to try and get baby board books to be provided to new mothers in low income areas in hopes that this will spark an interest in mother-child reading. I was looking through Freakonomics and statistics on literacy, including drop out and prison rates among those who are illiterate. dosomething.org and the website of the US Department of Education both provided good information on the effects of literacy on overall education and how successful a child is later in life. I will need to look into whether merely putting books into a household will be effective, and what else can be done to encourage learning. My next steps will be to see what programs like this are already being run and see how I can get funding and/or books for this project.

(P.S. Sorry this is late I was sick on Friday)
I had a few accomplishments. My research topic is what can be done to lower Hispanics' high school drop out rates and why social factors impede them from graduating high school. I will work alone on this project. I still have to narrow down the topic more, so that is on my ''to do list'' for next class.
ReplyDeleteThese are my sociological questions that will guide my research in the future:
What are the cause of Hispanics dropping out of high school?
What sociocultural factors propel Hispanics to academic failure?
Are Hispanics motivated? What truly motivates them to succeed?
What impedes their motivation?
Why do more Hispanics drop out more more than whites and Asians?
Do teachers just expect less from Hispanics?
Do non-Hispanics just have more privileges than Hispanics?
Is teaching performance a factor of dropout rates?
What does society as a whole view Hispanic students’ performance in school?
I have only done one specific research because it is the most helpful website I found. I found a book called, "Lessons from High-performing Hispanics Schools:Creating Learning Communities" by Pedro Reyes. I have to buy that book, so that is so also on my ''to do list''.
I read a preview of the book and it opened my eyes as to why hispanics are truly failing high school. Society assumes that hispanics are just less intelligent, but that is not the whole story. There are other factors that causes their failure in high school
what i did to day was i was able to narow down my topic to why are the most populer games the most vilent and vilent games and there ties to race. Some more questions are why do vilence out way crativity and also dose this efect volence in children. to do list for next clase to to reaserch thoses questions and to find political ties to this topic.
ReplyDelete(sorry this is late i was not there on friday)
http://venturebeat.com/community/2013/01/16/theres-no-way-around-it-the-most-popular-video-games-are-also-the-most-violent/
this can help me develope my topic because it gives spific exsamples that i can use as reaserch and it also gives reasons.
To day what i got done was that i finished picking a general topic. But i still have to narrow my topic down. what my topic is, is upwards mobility. my main Questions are what is upwards mobility, why is it so hard to accomplish and what causes this. these questions will help me get articles and research for my topic. what to do next time is to find articles and make a bibliography
ReplyDeleteI accomplished research on gun violence and bullying. I found a lot of websites and news articles that talk about the correlation between the two: which is what the focus of my project is going to be. I have found a lot of articles on gun violence with the Chicago Tribune and stories/articles on nbcnews.com, cbsnews.com, aap.org. These sources name lots of statistics and facts about bullying - information that is very prominent in students who attend elementary and high school. These sources highlight the relationship between gun violence and bullying that I want to find a solution to.This is the information I have to learn more in depth about so that I can try to create a solution that will bring change into this social aspect of a young person's life.
ReplyDeleteSociological Q's - What source do students have that allow them to have access to a gun? What factors determine how easy it is for a students to get a gun? Who demonstrates more gun violence - the bully or the victim? What kind of life do both have at home? Why don't they tell an adult? What type of bullying is most common and most detrimental?
By next class, I want to settle on one specific situation or school where there was a bullying incident that involved gun violence. I want to start evaluating and probing social questions with this situation first.

ReplyDeleteThese are sources we had today. We are researching gender and sexuality. We mostly looked at broad topics and tried to define the differences between gender and sexuality. We found some articles by sociologist defining gender and sexuality and what it means in today’s society. We also found some articles about people in the media relating to gender and sexuality (i.e. Bruce Jenner).
We want to narrow this topic down by a lot! Maybe down to Chicago, or even Payton and how our school responds to topics of gender and sexuality.
Today I researched transgender celebrities and how they receive critism.

The google Doc is still being updated with sources found in research.
My partner and I are narrowing down our problem to "How does gender roles in fluence sexism
